I lived in AZ for about 33 years total, mostly in the Phoenix area. The last time I was there I lived in Show Low, retired from Summit Health Hospital there. Then out on a ranch out of Snowflake. Had to move to a lower elevation. This old bod couldn't adjust to those 5,000-6,000' heights! I had container gardens there. One day, just for fun, I threw some pinto beans into a plot. EVERY ONE of those beans sprouted in that alkaline sand! I was amazed! Produced loads of good tasting beans.

Yes I know Pocatello. But I'm at the other end of the state, in the Panhandle. On a mountain. A frozen mountain at the moment. Waaaay shorter growing season than your family.

I live in McCalla, Alabama which is about 1/2 way between Birmingham. and Tuscaloosa on a one acre lot in a rural subdivision.
I have been keeping honeybees without chemical treatments for about 5 years and they are doing very well. I maintain a small garden, compost, and raise mealworms. I began keeping 3 red star hens in April of this year. I have lost one hen to what I believe was a compacted crop.
I am looking forward to learning from all you guys and am happy to share my beekeeping knowledge as well.

That is awesome! I have just begun making soap, also. (I have only done the hot-process method in a crock pot so far!) I am interested in beekeeping, too, but am worried about an allergy I have to yellow jackets.
