I can not find lye at any local retailers.
Is there any other way to make soap without lye?

Hi Sue:)

Have you looked into making your own lye? I have seen some videos on YouTube.

No you must have lye to make soap.

I suggest you check at the hardware store (I have found it at lowe's and tractor supply co) for this product

ROEBIC Crystal Drain Opener. It will say on the package "Contains 100% Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda)" It's in a white plastic container with a yellow label

This product is lye and can be used to make your soap. Do not buy anything that is not 100% Sodium Hydroxide or has anything else in it

If you still cant find it you can order lye online (thelyeguy.com) and you can make lye from wood ash but its very hard to gauge proper amount of homemade lye to use in recipes

Thanks ya'll. I was just coming to post that when I looked up how to make lye like Matt suggested, it gave me the suggestion on the roebic that moirakris is talking about. I found it at lowes. it was $16.00 for a small can but I really want to try this. Thanks again everyone.

I haven't been able to find lye locally either. I live in Newfoundland, Canada in a small town so don't have many options store-wise. I've looked at ordering on-line but because Newfoundland is an island any company I've contacted won't ship here (something to do with not being able to ship hazardous materials). Any suggestions?

I had to buy it online last time I made lye soap. You can get it on amazon.com, but you can get it at numerous other places also.
I have 7 silkie hens, 1 silkie roo,2 naked neck silkies, 1 frizzled silkie cockerel, 1 frizzled silkie pullet, 1 cochin, 1 frizzled cochin cockerel, 1 frizzled cochin pullet, and 8 polish pullets.
