I have found a way to keep that poop from building up on a chicken butt:) This idea really works and it seems to keep the eggs super clean! What do you guys do to keep the poop off your girls and keep those eggs nice and clean?

Matt, did you know the film covering the egg put there by the hen as she lays, has all kinds of antimicrobial properties?. Unwashed, clean eggs will keep longer unrefrigerated if they are not washed.

She is a big, beautiful buff orpington! She is very calm and sweet. Most of the heavier breeds like orpingtons and cochins will have the extra fluffy butts (my favorites), which are more prone to getting poopy. I keep my nest box straw changed out very regularly so my eggs stay clean. Occasionally though, poop does happen. Because I hatch some of my eggs, if it's not too bad, I will take a slightly damp paper towel and wipe off the offending smudge. If you don't hatch eggs, there is also an egg wash on the market that disinfects them without getting into the pores of the shell.

It's funny what a little trim can do;) It's funny how clean it keeps the eggs as well! The photo you attached, are these your girls? Looks like you're having trouble getting a clear shot because they were probably moving around like crazy! Ha Ha ha!!

I put Cayenne pepper in with their food and it cleared up their pasty butt. I only had the problem when I raised chicks in a brooder. They never had pasty butt when I let broodies raise them (not as much stress on the chicks).
I have 7 silkie hens, 1 silkie roo,2 naked neck silkies, 1 frizzled silkie cockerel, 1 frizzled silkie pullet, 1 cochin, 1 frizzled cochin cockerel, 1 frizzled cochin pullet, and 8 polish pullets.

Sorry, I guess I missed the part about older hens. I might need to learn how to read before trying to be helpful. :P
