Just the texture, I think. It irritates them, any kind of mulch or anything that will stick to them helps.

Coffee grounds works so good:) The best I have found but mulch never hearts. Pin needles and maple leaves attract night crawlers like crazy because they are both packed with sugars!

I get as much of it as I can every year and mulch heavy with it! Bring worms around like crazy and keeps weeds away:)
