TOPIC: Can you use turtle water?

Can you use turtle water? 15 Apr 2014 14:51 #1121

In the big tank at my house we have 2 red eared sliders. They produce copious amounts of waste. Smelliest pet I ever had. The water has to be exchanged very often. Any one have any experience with this? I was wondering if all this waste can be useful as fertilizer?

Hi PokiePie:)

When dealing with turtle waste it is always a good idea to compost it 1st. I would personally not use it on the plants leaves... Turtles can transmit salmonella so be very careful please!

Anyone else want to jump in on this one?

A radial flow filter attached to the main tank will settle out the poop collect that from the bottom of the tank as a sludge let it dry that should kill any samonila
