We moved out to the country last May, and this year we decided to put in our first garden. We planned the layout , we each picked our favorite veggies/fruits and we went to work. We went with a square foot style garden & my husband constructed four 4 x 4 boxes. Then he added a trellis along the back of 2 of the boxes and framed it all in with posts & knee high chicken wire to keep out the critters. We also planted 4 blueberry bushes ,a weeping mulberry tree, 2 apple trees, watermelons, pumpkins & 6 grape vines. Whew....it was a lot of hard work! We've have pretty good luck with most of the veggies & fruits...except the front right box , which we dedicated all to strawberries. Only a couple of the plants have started to slowly grow...kind of a bummer. We have already made some notes about what worked this year & what we need to change for next year. We've enjoyed picking the veggies/fruits & making yummy dishes with them. I even used some of the cucumbers last weekend & canned dill pickles for the first time ~ yeah! Having our own garden has definitely been a labor of love.
