I have found some mushrooms on a few of our dead aspen trees. They have a strong anise aroma. We looked them up and found they are oyster mushrooms, but they don't look like the picture you have posted.

Matt, I believe if you sterilize your coffee grounds better and add more mushroom spawn you'll get a successful result. You can get store bought oysters to"run" from stem cuttings, but I've had best results w/ purchased spawn(I'm super cheap, but the investment was worth it). Fungi Perfecti and Field and Forest are 2 good companies to order online from. Also adding about 1 part spawn to 2 parts substrate (coffee) insures better colonization. I've also found that having more spawn on top helps in the race against mold contamination. But once you get them going it's a perennial addition to your garden. Just keep them fed and watered w/ non-chlorinated water. Good luck.

I think I may buy some Spohn this year to try it out:) That way I can better understand how the whole process works. Thanks for all the tips and the encouragement!

What kind of mushrooms did you try to grow the mycelium from again?
