TOPIC: Distance between seedlings in raised bed

Distance between seedlings in raised bed 15 May 2014 03:33 #1238

I received organic vegetable seedlings with instructions for "Distance if Planting in Raised Beds". For spinach, the instructions read, "4-6 inches on center". Can someone please explain what this means?

I'm not really sure what that means, I've never heard that term before. Maybe they are assuming that you have a standard 3 foot wide raised bed and they want you to put it in the center of the bed? To me that is a huge waste of space. I think you will be fine as long as you space them out 4 to 6 inches apart:)

Thanks, Matt. I was worried that it was a stupid question, but if even you don't know what they mean, I guess it wasn't! :) I'll just keep them 4-6" apart.

My husband is an engineer and I have heard this phrase many times. It means 4-6 inches from the center of one plant to the center of the next plant. So I would guess the center of say a tomato would be the stalk. Hope that helps.

I see it was for spinach. So 4-6 inches from the center of the plant not the edge of the leaves.

Yea I was thinking if you plant the seeds 4 to 6 inches apart. I agree that it is the center of the plant if you are planting sprouted plants.
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. ;)

Here are two pictures of the same spinach plants, only 10 days apart. I'm so happy they grew a lot in just 10 days!
