We have a couple of plants growing near our storage shed that we are unable to identify. Is it a weed? Is it a vegetable? Is it edible? We dared to try a nibble of the leaves and found it quite tasty but aren't sure what it is and if it is safe to eat. And if it is safe to eat, how we can grow more. My husband, who typically hates anything green, found it and actually liked it's taste, so if it is safe to eat - I need to find a way to grow more. I love my greens so would love to have one we can both enjoy. :)

Any help identifying would be immensely appreciated. The leaves tasted almost cabbage like and the plant is growing some shoots that look almost broccoli like. Funny, either way, since my husband hates cabbage and broccoli! The stems are very strong and remind me of greens.

3 pictures attached. Also, a new one has sprung up and it is purple-ish in it's infancy stage, but the more mature one is entirely green.

I'm almost positive you have broccoli there:) You know, I don't like broccoli that's cooked but I love broccoli that is raw. Maybe the fresh broccoli is more appealing to your husband?

In any case, I will share this on our home farm ideas page to get more feedback.

Judy Wilson said: Broccoli Raab, but if it is purple and is sprouting at this time of year, it is likely purple-sprouting broccoli! It takes a long time from planting to harvest, almost a year here in the Pac. NW, and can be eaten just like regular broccoli raab or broccoli; loses its color when cooked. Enjoy!
