This is our Mumma chook who has been our broody hen for the last four years. We got her from a 'zoo' along with 'Chicken' (my daughter's pet chicken). They were selling baby chicks for $5 each as they were mixed breed birds; we thought they would make good pets for the kids but we had no idea what a good Mumma this girl could be.

For such a little girl (she is about the size of small child's head - she has some bantum in her we think) she often hatches over 15 eggs at a time (and they ALL hatch) and then she stays with the babies until they start laying eggs themselves. As you can see in this pic some of her babies and nearly the same size as her and yet she is still tending to them.

She is also the fiercest little hen when her babies are at stake. She often attacks the Rhode Island Red hens who try to take the babies food from them and comes out the winner. When we had the RI Red Rooster (who was a mean bugger and ended up getting the chop) she attacked him too and put him firmly in his place and if our dogs get to close to the chicks she chases them away (it is funny watching a Rotty cross running away with his tail between his legs, from this hen that is the size of his head).

She is such a good Mumma chook!

She is adorable and I love the stories about her. Sounds like one tough chicken *smile*
