That is odd to me. If I were you I would definitely put down some straw or some sort of mulch:) As a matter of fact, look into the "deep litter method". It basically allows the chickens to keep pooping on hay and over time the poop in the hay start to compost and you just keep adding hay. It also Will attract worms that will help the decomposition of the chicken manure and the straw. Your chickens will also aerate everything by digging through it every day looking for bugs which will also help in the decomposition process:)

Hi, I think three are Australorp chickens and one Bantam. We picked them up from a lady who had to give them up because of the complaints of a neighbour. She didn't know what they were.

They are great. One escaped over the back fence but she is back home safe. We added a barrier to stop her going back and clipped her wing. This same chook (Harriet) has given us an egg every day which is great considering it was a big move for them all.
