Only reason I could see as a downside is not being able to scratch and find things to eat

Why would want to go to expense and hassle of laying concreate "is that a chicken joke ?"

Thank you! :) We have a concrete slab out behind our back garage & my husband thought he could cut into the garage & make the coop area & then enclose part of the concrete as the run. (our back garage just houses our canoes, kayaks & lawn tractor so there is plenty of room for the coop part)
Thanks! :)

Does she have any kind of grassy area for them? We are only looking to get about 3 chickens, so if we needed to we could add in a little grassy section near the concrete.

Thanks!! :)

It can be good and bad, it just depends on how much cleaning you want to do. For me there are major benefits for the dirt for them. They love scratching around, they will have their own dust bath area, they can pick up minerals as they need it from the soil, straw and other bedding will compost way faster on soil, so I'll will soak up most liquids, there manures or bring around worms, etc etc:)

Concrete will be easier to clean but you will have some board chickens. That will mean they will try and get out of that area. I would really need to see the site to say if it's going to be really bad or if it will be okay:)

Almost all livestock would perfer to dirt/grass

If You have a grassy area or dirt for them away from the coop area think about makeing a chicken run tunnel some times called a chunnel on You Tube to bet the "girls" to a place to feed and scratch
